With the proclamation of the first Constitution of the Maldives, a Ministry of Home Affairs was instituted on 22 December 1932 under the name “Al Wuzara Al’Dhaakhiliyya”, with the mandate to oversee and execute the internal affairs of the country. Since then the internal affairs of Maldives remained under the jurisdiction of Al Wuzara Al’ Dhakhiliyya. For the past 88 years the Ministry of Home Affairs has been responsible for maintaining internal peace, security and law and order within the country.

One of the most historic changes which ensued in the life of the Ministry of Home Affairs was the separation of police from the armed forces and the establishment of the Maldives Police Service as a civil body under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The ministry is also responsible for governing the prison system and the juvenile justice system of the Maldives while maintaining public safety and security.
